1. What is Carbonica?

Carbonica is a carbon offset provider and a carbon trading company. We sell carbon offsets to individuals and businesses, and we provide carbon management services for businesses, including carbon auditing, carbon disclosure and GHG emissions management. We provide a carbon neutrality certification following the British Standards Institute’s PAS 2060 to certify that a company is carbon neutral (this certification is renewable on an annual basis with a suitable GHG emissions reductions management plan and purchase of carbon offsets).

In our carbon trading activity, Carbonica’s carbon desk works with brokers, traders and private clients to buy and sell carbon credits in the carbon markets.

2. Are you a non-profit or a for-profit company?

We are not a non-profit organization (or as it known in the UK, a charity) Carbonica is a private limited company. We believe that our clients have the right to demand a quality product and we are committed to give it to them. We don’t believe that the carbon markets should be the monopoly of non-profits and NGOs, who are driven by government grants, donations and a focus on lobbying. Most of that activity leads to spending well-meant donations and taxpayer’s money in administration, lobbying and political activism. We stay out of those areas and we focus on delivering a product that our customers want.

We firmly believe that the carbon markets can do so much more for climate change when they are well funded through the private sector, by having companies generate quality carbon offsets in sufficiently large scales to underpin large-scale reforestation and expensive renewable energies projects.

3. Are you an NGO, and if not, why is your domain ending in .org and not .com?

Our domain name’s ending .org is sometimes a source of confusion! We are not an NGO and we don’t try to come across as one. We are a private limited company. We understand that the .com domain would make this clearer, but it is not available. The domain name carbonica.com is registered by a dormant company in the Cayman Islands and we have frequently attempted to purchase it from them, without any luck. Perhaps one day they will respond? In the meantime, we are happy to keep our .org domain.

4. Where is Carbonica based?

We are based in London, UK, and we live in cyberspace, so wherever you are in the world, we’d love to hear from you. We are happy to work with global companies and customers worldwide.

5. I am an individual. How can Carbonica help me reduce my carbon footprint?

Have a look at our Carbon Footprint calculator. Click on one of the icons at the calculator’s top menu bar and enter the corresponding figures to calculate your carbon footprint. It is very simple to use. Each section will help you calculate one part of your carbon footprint: driving, household, public transport, etc. You can then choose to purchase carbon offsets by adding the GHG emissions corresponding to each section to your shopping basket.

Using every section of the Carbon Footprint calculator can be tedious and time consuming. Alternatively you can choose to go the icon corresponding to “Quick” offset in the calculator and make an informed choice of an approximate figure to offset. For example, a good annual average for a person is 10 tons of CO2, and 100 tons for a small company. You can enter that figure in “Quick offset” and proceed to checkout. You can enter any figure you like if you feel that you can make an informed guess of how much you want to offset.

At the checkout you will be directed to PayPal, where you can pay with any debit or credit card through the PayPal secure system, even if you do not have a PayPal account. PayPal is the fastest and safest payment processor, widely used by top companies such as Amazon and eBay. Many customers have their own existing PayPal accounts with stored card details, making payment even simpler.

If you find that the calculator is either too tricky to use or doesn’t fit your requirement and you want a more customized calculation, drop us an email (customer@carbonica.org) with a brief explanation of what you require to offset and we will do our best to help.

6. I am a business. What can Carbonica do for us?

The first port of call is to contact us by either email or telephone and we will try to find a customized solution for your requirements. If you have a specific requirement, we will put together a proposal for at no cost and with no obligation from your part. If you don’t, we will discuss options of what we can do for you in terms of reducing your carbon footprint and helping you with your long-term carbon management goals.

Every company is different and GHG emissions vary enormously from one sector to another. We would first like to know the size of your company and the type of activity, whether you are a manufacturer, service provider, retailer or other. Once we have a general idea of the scale of emissions we will be able to assess what we can do for you. You can rest assured that the information that you disclose to us will remain 100% confidential and we won’t use it for marketing purposes and it will not be shared with any third party (see our Privacy Policy).

We enjoy working with companies helping them find ways to cut emissions and implement energy efficiency measures. This can lead to great results in terms of carbon management as well as cutting operational costs.

Our emphasis is always in finding ways to reduce emissions, not just selling carbon offsets. We don’t approve of the “business as usual” principle, or any form of “greenwashing”; if a company is under the misapprehension that they can be certified carbon neutral by simply purchasing some carbon offsets without making an assessment of their environmental impact, a carbon management plan with GHG emissions reductions targets, then we are definitely not the right provider for them. We believe that all forward-looking companies should have a Corporate Social Responsibility policy (CSR) and the environment must be a strong part of their CSR vision, and we want to help companies achieve that vision.

On the other hand we are not “greener than thou” and don’t approve of making anyone feel guilty about their GHG emissions or global warming. We are realistic that businesses do have GHG emissions and a wider environmental impact, so the challenge for us is to set out a sound strategy to propose specific recommendations to reduce emissions, if and when this is feasible, and work with the client to achieve it.

Broadly speaking we can offer carbon offsets, carbon management and carbon neutrality certification. Drop us an email (sales@carbonica.org) and we will be happy to help.

7. I am a public institution or government department and we have strict requirements to use only CER as carbon offsets. Can Carbonica provide these?

Yes we can. We do provide CERs to institutional clients, government departments, other public organizations through their procurement programs and large utility companies. We work with large brokerage houses with direct access to the carbon markets to source your specific requirement at short notice. This service is only available to institutional clients and large companies. Write to us (carbondesk@carbonica.org) or phone to discuss your requirement.

8. I would like to be a carbon offset reseller. What can I do?

Your business can benefit from being a carbon offset reseller. Individuals are not eligible to be resellers unless they are registered sole traders. There are no set criteria of eligibility for businesses and we consider each case on an individual basis, so the first thing to do is to contact us by email (reseller@carbonica.org).

The reseller scheme will enable your company to generate additional revenue by selling carbon offsets with your products, either including them automatically or as an optional extra. We are happy to partner with retailers and service providers who are keen to offer a carbon neutral option of their product to their customers.

9. How can I buy carbon offsets? And if I do, what do I get for my money?

You can purchase carbon offsets through our Carbon Footprint Calculator or by contacting us directly, by email or phone. If you are a business, we prefer it if you contact us directly and we will customize the carbon offsets for you. If you use our calculator, once you calculate emissions you will be given two figures: one is the number of tons of CO2 and the second is the cost to purchase carbon offsets to offset these emissions. The cost has been calculated by multiplying the number of tons times the cost of the carbon offset unit (1 ton= GBP 2.99). When you click on the button “Buy Offsets” this will add this carbon offset to your shopping basket. You can then continue calculating other parts of your carbon footprint in other sections of the calculator or proceed to checkout.

After you have completed the checkout, you will receive an email confirmation of your order within 24 hours. The system is not automated, it is manual, but you will receive a response within that time.

Your order then will be processed within a day and you will be allocated carbon offsets from a portfolio of mixed projects. These may include renewable energy projects, waste management, industrial gas capture, and forestry.

If you have a preference of project type (or don’t want a certain project type), you can always send us an email (sales@carbonica.org) quoting your order reference number and let us know your preferences so that we can try to allocate a project that matches this.

You will receive a PDF document stating the key information about the project that your offset belongs to. This includes: project type, country of origin, year of vintage, name of the project and exact geographical location and number of units offset (each unit is 1 ton of CO2 that is offset). Your offset has a unique identifying reference number. In addition, the document will contain the URL to the Markit Environmental Registry where you can look up the project description documents and the entry where your “retired” offset is registered. We will retire the offsets in your name and it will be stated thus in the Comments field in the publicly available registry. This can be looked up by searching your offsets with your unique identifying number.

10. How can I be sure my money is spent in the right thing?

The organizations that we work with are of international repute and we only sell high quality carbon offsets that are certified with full transparency. Your carbon offsets are retired in Markit’s Environmental Registry, and these can be looked up online at any time with your unique identifying number. Markit is a leader in the financial markets, providing similar services to other commodities and trading platforms for institutional investors all over the world. Therefore there can be no double-counting or double-selling. Once you purchase them, the offsets belong to you.

The project owners and developers who originate the carbon offsets use reputable third-party verifiers and we only source offsets that have been issued by the most stringent standards, such as Gold Standard, VCS, Plan Vivo and CCB (as well as United Nations’ CERs, for compliance customers). These standards are the benchmark of warranty in the industry and ensure that your money is spent in emissions reductions projects, with the bulk of the funds reaching the frontline, benefiting directly the communities where the offsets originate.

11. I have been offered to invest in carbon credits to build up a carbon portfolio. Are carbon credits a suitable investment?

Certainly not. Sadly, in the past year there has been a proliferation of websites offering carbon credits to private investors. The FSA has issued several warnings (see for example http://www.fsa.gov.uk/consumerinformation/scamsandswindles/investment_scams/carbon_credit) regarding direct approaches by rogue companies who often operate boiler rooms or organize investment workshops and offer carbon credits to private investors. We concur with the FSA advice that it’s best to turn down such offers and report them to the authorities. We agree that it is very unwise to invest in carbon credits as an asset class for the purposes of short-term speculation or for long-term investment. No private individual should do that unless they have a good insight of the carbon markets or are suitably advised and assisted in their trading strategy by professionals.

We believe that carbon credits should be used for retirement purposes only, in order to offset one’s own carbon footprint. Even then, our advice is to only purchase offsets from suitably accredited providers who are affiliated to established registries (such as Markit or Caisse des Depots).

The use of carbon credits for speculation and asset management is a high-risk area that requires very technical and professional knowledge of the industry and therefore a very murky area for a private investor.

12. What is Carbonica Capital?

Carbonica Capital is our sister company and it is dedicated to asset management and carbon finance for high net-worth individuals and institutional investors. Climate change opens up new opportunities in clean energy and low-carbon assets and Carbonica Capital is dedicated to providing investors with durable returns and sustainable capital growth, using a transparent, intuitive and rigorous investment methodology across the low carbon sector.

You can contact the asset management team by email info@carbonicacapital.com.

German Chancellor's call for reform of ETS is relevant and timely

The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has demonstrated to be inherently flawed and over the years has not delivered the desired results to create a framework to reduce emissions in real terms. The surplus of CO2 certificates and low prices mean the motivation to implement emission reduction strategies is no longer there for the largest emitters, and in some cases utilities have increased their emissions even though their operations have been reduced as a cause of the economic downturn.

Innovation Needed To Provide Zero-Carbon Destination For Gas

Use of abundant natural gas across the globe will not “discernably reduce fossil fuel CO2 emissions,” concludes a new research letter in Nature, as increased use of natural gas can displace coal and zero-carbon sources like nuclear and solar.
Merkel says Europe must reform emissions trading scheme quickly

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that Europe must agree quickly on a reform of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and as part of that, surplus CO2 certificates must be reduced.
Global CO2 pricing scheme surfaces ahead of 2015 climate summit

A team of scholars at Paris Dauphine University has proposed an international carbon trading system, whereby countries with the highest average CO2 emissions pay the most. A simple, yet ambitious scheme that hinges upon cooperation from the world's largest emitter, China.
